Daily Homework
Students will receive no more than 20 minutes of homework a day, Monday through Thursday:
- Our homework will always correspond to what we learned in class that day!
- Occasionally our homework will involve preparation for projects or oral presentations. Students will receive plenty of notice for such events.
Note to students: You are responsible for returning your homework packet every Friday. I will check it for completion and understanding as part of your overall grade. If you worked the entire 20 minutes and did not finish your homework, please have your parent/guardian write me a short note explaining that you worked the entire time, giving your best effort, and you just could not finish. I will give you full credit for that assignment. Homework should be a tool, not a burden!
Typing:
If students have access to a computer with a keyboard, please encourage them to practice typing for 10-20 minutes a night whenever possible. It is imperative that students become familiar with keyboard skills in order to prepare for the SBAC test in 3rd grade. We will begin practicing in class, but extra practice never hurts! There are typing game suggestions on the Resources page above.
Reading:
Room 13 loves reading! Please try your best to read for a few minutes every single night, either independently or with someone else! You will receive a reading log in your take-home folder that should be filled out each time you read a book/chapter. Each time you fill up a reading log, be sure to send it back to class so that I can reward you with a treat!
Note: If you need an extra reading log, please download the file at the bottom of this page.
How Parents Can Help:
Students will not receive homework on weekends or holidays, unless it is in preparation for a special project/presentation and they've had ample weeknight time to prepare, as well.

How Parents Can Help:
- Monitor your child's reading. Make sure he/she is reading at least 20 minutes every day.
- Read and write often to model authentic uses to your child. For example, reading newspapers and magazines, writing grocery lists, reading recipes, etc.
- Read a novel on long car trips or rent books-on-tape from the library for them to listen to on the ride.
- Discuss with your child the books that he/she reads.
- Talk to your child about what he/she is reading. Be sure to have your child explain or prove his/her thinking, too.
